Max Farbman is 18 years old and began his percussion studies at the age of 13. He is currently a student of Lia DeRoin and is a member of the Midwest Young Artists (MYA) Symphony Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. Max has been a student at MYA for 6 years, and this year was awarded the Barbara Butler/Charles Geyer Named Merit Scholarship. He also plays in the Buffalo Grove High School Band and Orchestra Program and has played in the District 214 Honors Orchestra and the Illinois Music Educators Association District 7 Festival Orchestra.
Max has attended numerous summer music programs including the Percussion/Steel Pan and Symphony Sessions at the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin, where he twice received the “Outstanding Performer Award”, and the Percussion Institute at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. In 2011, Max was a finalist in the District 214 Concerto Competition, and in 2012 and 2013, he was a winner of the MYA Walgreens National Concerto Competition and a finalist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions playing the Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra by Paul Creston.
In past years Max has studied with Rob Dillon of Third Coast Percussion, Patsy Dash of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Sarah Barnes. He has also played in masterclasses for many percussionists including She-e Wu, Michael Burritt, Vadim Karpinos, Thomas Sherwood, and Michael Kozakis.
Max will be attending Yale University beginning this fall.
