Hansuh Rhee, age 16, is the Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Fellow and Rachel Barton Pine Scholar of the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy program for gifted pre-college musicians where she studies privately with Roland and Almita Vamos. She began her violin studies at age 7, teachers including Genie Wie and Marko Dreher. Hansuh is laureate of the Society of American Musicians (SAM) competition, Music Teachers National Association Illinois and Regional Division (MTNA), Sejong, Walgreens National Concerto Competition Open Division Overall Winner, DePaul Concerto Competition, Chinese Fine Arts Competition, North Suburban Symphony Young Musicians Competition, and National Young Arts Foundation Winner.
As the winner of the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra’s Harvey E. Mittenthal Chair Scholarship, she a member of the SVSO first violin section for the 2013-14 season. Important performances include solo concerts at the Steinway Young Arts Series, the International Beethoven Music Festival, Ryerson Woods Concert Series, City Hall in Ludlow, Vermont Public Television, soloing with the Oistrach Symphony and MIC Academy strings at Bennet Gordon Hall, and performing at the Korean American Day Celebration in Chicago.
She has had many master classes with renowned artists such as Paul Neubauer, Danny Phillips, David Taylor, William Van de Sloot, Ed Klorman, Ilya Kaler, James Ehnes, David Bowlin, Joel Smirnoff, and Yair Kless. As an active chamber musician , she was violinist of the Okemo String Quartet, winning 1st place in the Jules M. Laser chamber music competition and semi finalist and finalists in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Saint Paul National String Quartet Competition. Hansuh has performed in Gala concerts honoring Yo-yo Ma, Lang-Lang and Riccardo Mutti. Hansuh also served as the Concert Master at her previous school orchestra and district orchestra, the Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra (GSO). She is looking forward to have her Symphony Center Solo Debut in February.
