On Saturday’s broadcast, we feature 14 year old pianist Alice Zhang.
Alice attends Vernon Hills High School. She began studying piano with Brenda Huang at age four. Alice is an active performer and competitor locally and nationally. She won Second Prize in the G. Gershwin International Music Competition Young Artist Category ages 13 to 18 in New York on May 1, 2015. In March of 2015, she was selected as the youngest of 7 finalists in the CSO Youth Auditions. In late 2014, she was named as the Overall Winner of the MYA Junior Division of the National Walgreens Concerto Competition held at Ravinia. The recording of her performance of the second movement of Chopin Concerto No. 2 with the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra was featured on WFMT’s Introductions. In May of 2014, she won Second Prize in the Junior Division of the Emilio del Rosario (EDR) General Piano Concerto Competition and performed Chopin’s Concerto No. 2 the first movement with the Harper Symphony Orchestra.
In early 2015, Alice had a successful solo recital at PianoForte’s salon series. Alice has also performed at Benaroya Hall of Seattle as the Gold Medalist in the International Seattle Piano Competition’s Youth Division and in the honor recital at Vienna’s prestigious Ehrbar Hall where she participated in the International Piano Festival in 2011.
In order to serve the community, Alice has performed many solo recitals in retirement houses as well as the Chicago Women’s Athletic Club. She also held a solo recital in the Young Steinway Concert series in 2014 at Skokie library.
Alice is also an active chamber music player; she was the pianist of Trio Pochettino, which advanced to the Quarterfinals at the 2015 National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in South Bend, Indiana. This year, she is playing with a cellist and clarinetist in Trio Philadelphos.
As a violinist, she is the concertmaster of the Vernon Hills High School Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides music, she enjoys math and tennis.
