Robin Lawler, 17, violin and DePaul Concerto Festival Winners

Violinist Robin Lawler won the Southwest Symphony Orchestra’s concerto competition at the age of thirteen.

Today, we’ll hear performance from 17 year old violinist Robin Lawler and also continue last week’s program with a couple more performances from the 2012 DePaul Concerto Festival for Young Performers.

Robin Lawler, a twelfth grader at Morgan Park Academy, began violin studies at the age of six. She has studied with Janet Kuester, Carl Johnston, Florentina Ramniceanu, and Maja Vukovic.  She won the Southwest Symphony Orchestra’s concerto competition at the age of thirteen, performing Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen.  At the age of seventeen, she won the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra’s concerto competition.  She won recognition at the Music Festival in Honor of Confucius, where violinist Rachel Barton Pine served as a judge.  She has been selected to perform in a master class for Robert Hanford, concertmaster of the Lyric Opera.  At the age of twelve, she took first place in the virtuoso category of the Illinois Music Association competition.  She has performed at the Friends of the Illinois Philharmonic Rising Star Showcase at Prairie State College. For four years, she attended the OPUS Chamber Music Camp, earning recognition for Outstanding Solo Performer, Outstanding Musicianship, and Outstanding Chamber Ensemble. Twice, she was selected as a finalist in the West Suburban Symphony concerto competition.  She has also been recognized in the Musichorale scholarship competition.

Lawler has organized benefit concerts for the Episcopal Relief and Development fund and the Public Action to Deliver Shelter.  She has been a member of the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, and the Suburban Youth Symphony Orchestra.  She excels academically, and is a member of her school’s WYSE team, where she twice placed first in state for Engineering Graphics at the University of Illinois in Urbana.
