*Broadcast begins at 10AM instead of the usual 11AM due to an early start of today’s live broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera from New York.
While there are abundant performance opportunities and competition for young musicians, there are far fewer opportunities through which young composers can have their talents recognized. In an effort to stimulate interest in the music of our time and support young composers in their endeavors, the Music Institute of Chicago (MIC) began the Generation Next Young Composer’s Competition in 2006.
Each year, the winning scores from the competition are performed live in concert, by talented young musicians from MIC’s Academy and Community Music School Programs. The concerts take place at MIC’s Nichols Concert Hall in downtown Evanston, Illinois. Called a “visual and sonic gem” by Chicago Tribune critic John von Rhein, the hall provides young composers the rare opportunity to hear their works performed by top musicians in an acoustically and visually beautiful concert hall.
We look forward to hearing another year of the best and brightest in new music by aspiring young composers.
