18 year old pianist James Stinehart.

James G. Stinehart, age 18, is a senior at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois.

James’s debut as a pianist was at age 9, when he played a Haydn piano concerto in two concerts in Indiana with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. As a junior, he won the New Trier High School concerto competition, and performed Prokofieff piano concerto No. 2 with the New Trier Symphony Orchestra. He won first place in the senior division of the Steinway piano competition. He also was selected to play in the Young Steinway Concert
Series, and performed a piano recital at Skokie Library.

As a sophomore, James took first place in the North Shore Music Teacher’s Association Piano Competition, and placed second in the state of Illinois in the senior division of the Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association finals. James has won the MYA piano division of the Walgreen’s concerto competition three times. His piano teacher is Brenda Huang.

James is principal cellist in the New Trier Symphony Orchestra, which is taking a tour to Sidney, Australia over spring break. James is playing in the Illinois All-State Orchestra concert in Peoria later this month. James also plays cello with the Midwest Young Artists (MYA) Symphony Orchestra, which has toured Germany and China. His chamber ensemble made it to the semi-finals in the Fischoff national competition held at Notre Dame. Two of James’s string ensembles have performed on WFMT radio, including playing several of his original compositions. As a composer, he won first place in the Music Institute of Chicago’s music composition competition in the spring of 2010.

James frequently volunteers and loves to play piano and cello at retirement homes, as well as other social service functions. As for non-musical interests, James is fluent in Chinese and is learning German, and he is on the New Trier varsity volleyball team.
