Timothy Zhou, 17, started playing piano at age seven. He has won awards at various competitions, including 1st place at Steinway Young Artist Competition in 2006 and Honorable Mentions at the Music Teachers National Association piano competition in 2011 and 2012. He also participated in chamber music programs and performed in concerts with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras after winning the CYSO Concerto Competition. More recently in 2012 he was a finalist at the Crain-Maling Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions and in 2013 he won 2nd place in the Elmhurst Concerto Competition.
Timothy previously attended Neuqua Valley High School and now goes to at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. He has taken piano lessons from Julia Tsien for nine years but he currently studies with Dr. Sylvia Wang at Northwestern University and has studied with her for a year. Aside from music, Timothy also enjoys playing chess, learning about mathematics, and reading.
