Sorcha Barr, 18, flute

18 year old flutist Sorcha Barr in the studio with host David Polk.

Sorcha Barr is a senior at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville where she performs with the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Sorcha began Flute after moving to the United States from Ireland in 2000. Originally taught by Dr. Cate Hummel, Sorcha has studied with Hideko Amano for the past five years. Sorcha performed as featured soloist in concertos with the Neuqua Valley Symphony Orchestra in 2011 and the Oistrach Symphony Orchestra in 2012, as well as placing in the Chicago Flute Club student competitions and the Society of American Musicians competitions. Sorcha has received Honorable Mention in both the CSO Crain-Maling Auditions and the Walgreens Concerto Competition. An All-State Musician, Sorcha has performed in the IMEA All-State Honors Band (2011, 2012), as well as the IMEA District 9 band (2009, 2010, 2012).

Sorcha was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music programs for three years, and first performed on WFMT’s Introductions two years ago with the Adelphi Flute Quartet. Sorcha teaches young students to play flute and plays at her church in Naperville accompanying various choirs.

Sorcha will be attending the University of Colorado at Boulder as a Flute Performance Major, studying under Professor Christina Jennings.
