The Grayslake North Honors Treble choir, led by Paul Nielsen, is one of 3 curricular choirs at Grayslake North HS, and in the school’s short 8 year history the choir has consistently scored Division I ratings at the annual Illinois High School Association contest, and have performed in Williamsburg, VA, Disneyworld and at Symphony Center in Chicago. The choir also performs around the community for civic events as well as concerts that are held at the school.
We’ll also hear a performance by 17 year old clarinetist Ryan Toher, a recent graduate of Buffalo Grove High School who also performed with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Ryan will attend Oberlin Conservatory in the fall to pursue a degree in Clarinet Performance under the tutelage of Professor Richard Hawkins. He is currently studying with Sergey Gutorov.
Ryan is the principal clarinetist of both the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and CYSO’s Encore Chamber Orchestra. In addition, Ryan is a member of the CYSO chamber ensemble program as part of the Primavera Quintet which performed on WFMT Introductions in May.
At the state level, Ryan was the principal clarinetist of the Illinois Music Educators Association Honors All-State Orchestra and the District VII Orchestra. As a soloist, Ryan was a finalist in his high school District 214 Concerto Competition and won Honorable Mention at the Midwest Young Artists Walgreens Concerto Competition.
Over the past few summers, Ryan has participated in some of the nation’s top music programs. This past summer, Ryan was a member of the Young Artists Orchestra at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute where he was also a member of the clarinet workshop under BU Professor Ethan Sloane and worked with Boston Symphony Orchestra clarinetists. Prior to his experience at BUTI, Ryan attended Interlochen Center for the Arts for three summers. Here, Ryan was principal of the Interlochen Philharmonic and a member of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. Ryan is looking forward to going back to Interlochen this summer as an Emerson Scholar.
