Owen Burton (www.owenburton.com) is a classical guitarist who recently graduated from Lyons Township High School. He began playing guitar at age 9 and primarily taught himself, developing a foundation by playing along with blues and rock and roll recordings on a hand-me-down guitar.
Not until high school did he begin to dabble in the classical technique. The Lyons Township band director, Huei-Yuan Pan, introduced him to classical guitar instructor Jason Deroche, and he has studied with Deroche ever since. In the last year he also began studying piano with Chris Garofalo. Owen also participated in the high school jazz ensemble and is lead guitar in the rock band The Big Whigs.
Owen just completed a week-long guitar program at Northwestern University, where he studied under Anne Waller, Mark Maxwell and Oscar Ghiglia. Next year he will be studying classical guitar performance at DePaul University under Maxwell.
We’ll also hear an original composition by 18 year old David Jin, who just graduated from Stevenson High School and the Merit School of Music. The piece, inspired by Chinese Opera, was performed by the Merit School of Music Symphony Orchestra.
